About photobiomodulation (PBM) and red light therapy (RLT)
What is PBM/RLT?
Photobiomodulation (PBM), commonly known as red light therapy or low-level laser therapy, is a non-invasive therapy that involves the application red or near-infrared light to the body to stimulate cellular processes. It may promote tissue repair and offers various health benefits. Its popularity is increasing due to the growing body of research and its non-invasive nature.
What are the benefits of PBM/RLT?
Some benefits include:
Who can benefit from PBM/RLT?
Anyone can benefit from PBM. People—like plants—need exposure to natural sunlight, which includes wavelengths in the the visible spectrum (red to violet) as well as invisible wavelengths such as ultraviolet (UV) and infrared. Our modern lifestyles often limit our access to sunlight and replaces it with artificial blue light from indoor lighting and/or screens. In a northerly location like Scotland, access to sunlight can be further limited due to the weather and shorter days during the winter months. We're also all more attune to the damaging effects of UV. PBM/RLT can add beneficial red and near-infrared light—without harmful UV exposure—to help restore balance to our light exposure.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with PBM/RLT?
Red light therapy is generally considered safe when used properly. Some individuals may experience mild skin warmth or redness after use, but this typically resolves quickly. Responses to red light therapy vary widely between individuals.
Is there anyone PBM/RLT is not suitable for?
Red light therapy is not recommended for people with light sensitivities, for people who take certain medications that increase their sensitivity to sunlight (the use of photosensitisers or photosensitising drugs) or for people with certain medical conditions, such as cancer or inherited eye diseases. There is limited research on its use during pregnancy.
About our service
What can I expect?
You can expect a bespoke service tailored to your individual needs and preferences, which will be discussed at your initial consultation. Depending on your goals, we may use a combination of devices—such as full body panels or smaller, more targeted devices—and depending on your preferences, you may opt to stand, sit, or lie down during treatment time.
What should I bring/wear?
As light should be applied to bare skin, the area to be treated needs to be exposed.
Full body sessions: We recommend bringing/wearing minimal sportswear or swimwear.
Targeted sessions: As long as we can easily access the specific areas of interest (eg, by rolling up clothing, taking off shoes, etc), you should be good to go.
Do you offer gift cards or vouchers?
Yes. A bespoke package of red light therapy sessions makes for a unique and thoughtful gift. We prepare physical gift packages by hand and can post this out to your recipient as required. Contact us to discuss.
What is your refund/cancellation policy?
As we are open by appointment, we require at least 48 hours' notice for any cancellations. Any late cancellations or no shows will be billed, including if the session has been paid for in advance as part of a package. Gift cards/packages are non-refundable.
What is the time-limit/expiration on packages?
Full body red light therapy session packs are valid for 6 months from purchase. Treatment packages for specific concerns are valid for the length specified in the package, starting from the first booked appointment of the package.
Will I need to sign a consent form?
Yes. The consent form is standard practice and will need to be signed at your first appointment.
